GHS 21st Century Program
21st Century Grandview is an after-school and summer program funded by OSPI and managed by NCAC, a division of YVFWC. We operate with a small team of GHS and local staff members who put in extra hours after school to provide additional skill building and learning opportunities for our youth. Our program is split into three different offerings for our youth. 1) A four day a week Power Lifting program with an intent to send our youth to compete locally and nationally. 2) A four day a week Robotics program with an intent to send our youth to compete locally and nationally. 3) Weekly offerings of a variety of different skills taught by local experts and mentors who volunteer their time to pass on their skills. Any student at GHS and Compass is welcome to attend our program. Youth can collect a blue registration form from Mr. Gilliss at any time during the day. There is no cost to students or their families to enroll and be a part of the program. The program also includes periodic workshops and enrichment for the parents of youth registered in the 21st Century program. Flyers are sent home inviting those parents to attend the functions as they arise.
Upcoming program offerings
Program for all participating youth begins right at 2:15.
From 2:15 to 2:45, students will have 30 minutes to hang out with friends, eat the provided snack and collect the homework or materials they will need to begin the 30 minutes of homework/tutoring time.
From 2:45 - 3:15, we will have between 2-4 teachers available to help the students complete their homework, receive additional tutoring or to work on projects. Students who have satisfactory grades in all classes will be directed to read for 30 minutes.
From 3:15 - 5:15, youth will break off into their own programs of interest, whether robotics, power lifting or the skill being taught that week.
At 5:15, if your youth does not drive their own vehicle or walk home, they will need to be picked up at the high school.
Power Lifting - We are pleased to have Coach Raúl León on our 21st Century staff this year. Raúl is a nationally certified power lifting coach. He also competes locally and nationally and still holds the GHS Bench Press Record from the early 90's when he attended GHS.
Robotics and Engineering - We are excited to have Mr. Brad Urquhart back on staff this year. He will be leading youth in designing robots to take to local competitions. Youth who are involved in this after-school program have the option to build robots, 3D pring or build electronic circuits with our bread boards and Arduino technology.
Weekly offerings - We have had multiple requests from community members to share their talents and skills with the youth. These program offerings change weekly. Offerings this year will include: Hair Braiding, Homemade party/event decorations, horseback riding, swim lessons, rock wall climbing, wood carving, baking, Origami, cooking lessons, and more as additional volunteers sign up.
If you are interested in passing on your own skill sets or talents, please contact Mr. Kyle Gilliss at kgilliss@gsd200.org
All program offerings are Monday through Thursday from 2:15 - 5:15. 30 minutes of mandatory study/homework/tutoring time is included at the beginning of every program day for all 21st Century participants.
